Medical Applications

Since it's inception Quantum Devices has played a major role in the advancement of medical instrumentation. Our LEDs and detectors can be found in leading manufacturers glucometers and pulse oximeters. and photodynamic therapy investigational devices.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a cancer treatment modality that recently has been applied to brain tumors, breast cancer, coronary artery disease, and skin disorders. PDT consists of intravenously injecting a photosensitizer, which preferentially accumulates in tumor cells, into a patient then activating the photosensitizer with a light source. This results in free radical generation followed by cell death. The development of more effective light sources for PDT has been facilitated by applications of space light-emitting diode array technology; thus permitting deeper tumor penetration and wider coverage area.

Quantum Devices, Inc. has designed and developed several patented LED light sources to replace costly and unreliable laser sources. Recently there was a phase two clinical investigation study that used the QBMEDXM-728 Solid State Lighting System (pictured above) for Cancer treatment. Our Unique LED Neural Probe is also being investigated for the treatment of brain tumors here in Wisconsin.

At the Medical College of Wisconsin our SpectraLife LED light sources are being used in a number of medical applications. Using funding from the NASA Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) program. We are developing light sources that can aid in wound healing as well as light sources that help treat cancer.
